I Got Tagged!

Okay.. who started this tagging????? Betty tagged me and now I'm supposed to tell y'all 6 weird things about me... who says I'm weird? And not just weird.. but weird times 6.... Hmmmmmpffff.... Well... okay.. I'll play...

6. I like boxes. Now as an adult, I've stuck to cool decorative boxes.. my prize possession is a puzzle box from Turkey. As a kid, I even liked cardboard boxes.. is there anything more fun than making forts and things out of boxes?? :)

5. I have been wearing a silver bracelet for about 20 years... only take it off if I go swimming. I love silver jewelry and am always picking up new little pieces.. but I usually don't wear it more than a couple of weeks and it ends up in the jewelry box. Except my bracelet.

4. I'm a collector of scrapbooking supplies. I used to paper scrap a lot... but now, if I scrap, it's mostly digital... but I still buy a lot of supplies and tools... I'm addicted to it.

3. I'm going to NYC in March (no that's not weird)... but I'm going with 2 others... one of them I've never met.. the other one I've only met once... Anna... Melinda... you know who you are! :)

2. I have an overly sensitive sense of smell.. especially when it comes to perfumes and colognes... I don't understand how people can put that stuff on so strong and not realize they are asphyxiating the rest of the world!

1. I like twigs... pictures of twigs... (okay.. this one should be obvious by now)... so it shouldn't surprise anyone that I'll probably be posting more twig shots before this challenge is over!

Okay... Now it's my turn... I'm tagging Melinda, Anna, Greg, Denise, Karrie, and Mike. So there!

Day 17 - The Lake, the Cemetery, and the Headstone

One thing this challenge has gotten me to do is start taking pictures of all those things I've noticed for years around here. It has also gotten me to explore this pretty little town I live in.

My apartment complex is on this lake and I have always loved this view from around the bend. Today I finally snapped a quick shot on my way to work this morning.

When I took the picture of the flag yesterday, I turned down a street I have never been on before and found this old cemetery. Today I stopped by there to take a few pictures.

I want to go back when the light is different. After lunch today the clouds moved in again and by the time I got off work it was overcast and getting dark. I'll try it again another day.

Day 16 - Patriotism and Signs of Spring

I didn't have much time to take pictures today... errands at lunchtime... and after work... I did manage to stop at this little park of sculptures close to my office. I wasn't happy with the way the pictures of the sculptures turned out, and I plan to reshoot them... but I did catch this little robin. It's really only good for web posting because it's very very cropped.. but that's okay... :)

I also stopped to snap a shot of this flag. It's out every day on this fence and I just like the look of it. Just a simple show of patriotism.

Day 15 - Nature at It's Finest

Went for a walk with a friend at lunchtime today. We've been wanting to explore a nature trail they put in, so we drove over and took a walk. It's kind of neat and has lots of potential. There were several place I want to check out... when we have a bit more time..
I love how the tree shadows created the straight lines on the path... This path leads to one of the local piers.. and I headed back over there after work.

The sun was just getting to that really pretty golden stage.

This little inlet was just up the path from the pier. That's about as far as I would go by myself in the evening and I'm glad I did... The sun and shadow really made this pop..

Then, of course, my usual twig picture... moon and twig again. What can I say.. I love the twigs.. and when the moon is in just the right spot, I can't resist taking the shot.

Finally, the colors really started to pop after the sun went down.. I can't decide which of these I like better.... this one?? or..

This one?

A family came to the pier and was asking me about the pictures. The wife asked me if pictures of the Mobile skyline showed the buildings really clearly. I told her with my lens, they wouldn't be great.. but I decided to give it a try.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Of course, it helps that the sky was cooperating. Now I'm tired... all that fresh air! :)

Day 14 - Grilling by Moonlight

I finally got my new gas grill set up and working on my balcony. Now you have to understand... I'm scared to death of fire and gas in the same vincinty... I mean really, what kind of idiot turns on gas and puts a match to it?? But, my apartment complex changed the rules.. no more charcoal grilling.. Since I really love to grill, I finally broken down and got a gas grill. Today a friend helped me get it upstairs.. so once it was hooked up.. I threw a couple of salmon filets and some chicken breast on to grill.. I'm going to love being able to grill again.. and not having to wait for the coals to get ready will be wonderful..

Of course, I love the twig shots.. I was struggling to frame this one with the moon.. couldn't get the angle I wanted from my balcony, but it didn't turn out too bad.

Day 13 - Lucky Rabbit

I've never quite understood why rabbit's feet are lucky... just the whole thought of them kind of creeps me out... I tend to think a rabbit that retains its feet are the lucky ones... :) Okay.. so I'm in a weird mood today.. blame it on the rain that came back today... yuck! I wasn't in the mood to get out and get pictures, but when I spotted this sweet bunny I grabbed my camera and got out to take a shot. Of course it took off pretty quickly so this is just about all I managed.

Day 12 - Seabirds, Sunsets and a Star

Had a great time at the Fairhope Pier tonight after work. They reopened it a little over a month ago and this was the first time I have been back down there since it reopened. This pier was just about destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. They are still working on the restaurant, but I am looking forward to getting a lot more pictures down here. Oh... I picked up the Cokin filter holder today.. and some of these shots were taken using the sunset and the blue graduated filters.

You can always find seagulls around here. I liked the look of these two... I think they are ignoring each other.

I am always watching for herons.. would love to get a GREAT shot... this one and the one below are some of the best I've ever gotten. This second one was almost an accident... I sure didn't plan it.

Now this next shot I planned. I saw these two walking.. saw the way the sunset was looking... and knew I could get a great silhouette... it turned out better than I thought it would...

And finally my favorite of the whole day!

This was one of the last shots I took... it was a 20 second exposure that was front lighted by a street light. I wanted to get that star in the frame and I love how it turned out.

Day 11 - Sunshine and Snapshots

The sun came out today.. finally! First time since I before I got sick, and it really improved my mood. I started taking pictures when I walked out the door and kept taking them all day until it was too dark to get another shot..

Yep... another twig shot.. but see that blue sky.... it was beautiful!

Then I got to work and the main conference room was set up for CPR class... this was a weird site to walk in on..

Lunch with friends today at Guido's. I love this place... a little spot where they have the best food... Those are my friends in the middle.

The menu is put on the chalkboard each day and items erased as they run out. I had the crab cakes with creole sauce today.... yummmm... The salmon, the veal marsala, and the grouper are all good too although the sauce on the fish changes depending on who's cooking..

After work I headed out to the causeway to see what was out there... I've been wanting to shoot this shed for a while... I love the colors and things were just really intense looking tonight..

Then I headed over to another favorite spot on the causeway and found the pelicans hanging out. I got a TON of shots of them... but this is one of my favorites...

And even a heron... although shortly after this the pelicans ran him off...

It was great to be outside and really enjoying it today... And to catch the pelicans at the end of the day.. well they are some of my favorites so you can imagine that it just made my day.

Day 10 - Bailee - the Bag Lady

I was late getting pictures today, but Bailee decided to be cute... :) Well, she's always cute, but tonight she decided to play in a bag I left on the floor... Now she's sleeping peacefully beside me..... Of course that means that tonight, when I'm ready to sleep, she'll be ready to stay up and play..

After a few shots, she let me know she was bored with the whole process.

I'm lucky to have such a sweet, sometimes cooperative, housemate. :)

Day 9 - Mask

Today was another busy day.. with lots of frustrations at work.. and of course limited time in daylight... at least the rain sort of cleared up for a little while. So after work, since I needed some makeup, I headed over the Merle Norman. I love the store here because they'll do a facial on you anytime you drop in, no charge. Of course, I always buy something so maybe that's why Tressie is so good to me. Since my face has been horrible since I was so sick last week, I really wanted that facial... and while I was there, I noticed this mask. I really could have used a mask like this at work today to hide some of my feelings... lots of change in the air.. lots of stress.. It's just got to get better.

Day 8 - Twigs Twigs Twigs

Didn't really have a lot of time to take pix today.. and I'm not sure I'm all that crazy about any of these... but for some reason I got interested in twigs today..

Day 7 - My Turn with the Reverse Lens Trick

WOW WOW WOW !!! I really didn't realize how easy (sort of) this is to do... and how addicting it would be.... I'm going through my apartment looking for little things to shoot like this. It really was a learning experience since I not only had to figure out how to make my camera work without a lens on it (who knew?? LOL) and how to get the lighting right... love love love my new flash... :)

The dime was first. It took about 4 attempts before I got this one.

Then it was the bracelet... This is a stone bracelet, thick like a cuff, but put together with elastic thread.

This next one is the top of a box a friend gave me. Its made of straw and decorated with cracked eggshells. These are tiny little pieces of eggshell. The biggest piece is not much bigger than the lead at the tip of a pencil.

Then I took some of those little straws (the really thin ones) and taped a group together.. I love how this turned out... Sharpness is a real issue though with the tiny DOF.

Finally the thread... this is one of those little rolls that comes in a mini sewing kit. I love that you can see the texture in the thread!

Okay... I'm hooked on this... don't be surprised to see more... maybe some flowers...

Day 6 - Down at the Marina

Made a quick trip out today and got these shots.... I hope to spend a bit more time out during this next week.. when I can get away from the office..

In the meantime, seagulls and shrimpboats are such a common sight around here, it just seemed natural to get a shot of them. The seagull is probably not the best quality, but there is something about the picture I really like.
Once again I used Ann's B&W Action on the shrimpboats... which is quickly becoming one of my favorite actions. I can't decide which I like better, the B&W or the color...

Day 5 - Flash & Mirrors

Today I decided to try shooting on a mirror for the first time.. I'm still trying to learn about my flash too so this was real practice for me.

I used Ann's B&W Actions on this last picture... I like the abstract look of it.

Day 4 - My Constant Companion This Week

Once again I've resorted to taking pictures of my sweet kitty... she's been my constant companion all week while I've been holed up here. She sleeps alot during the day (well we both have been) but she likes to play at night when I'm still wanting to sleep... mostly she likes to play with my feet when I move them under the covers.. thank goodness for the thickness of the feather comforter.

Day 3 - Oh Bailee... What Have You Been Up To?

Bailee is a very typical orange tabby.. no black on her at all... So how come she has black spots on her ears now??

Maybe because she was playing around somewhere she shouldn't have been ---like the fireplace.

Day 2 - What Do You Do When You Have the Flu?

I took pictures of the medicine.... I feel like I've pumped enough of it into my system these last 2 days... not that it seems to be helping. Now it seems to be a full blown flu virus.

After surviving the worse set of chills I ever remember experiencing this morning, and then sleeping away most of the day, I'm up and moving again.. at least a little. So I took the time to set up and snap a quick shot... Nothing exciting, but at least it's something.

Day 1 - A Little Winter Color

Well this isn't what I had planned for my first day on this project, and I really hoped to have more choices. Afterall, part of the idea of this challenge is to get up and get to using the camera.

I also didn't plan to be sick the first day either. But after three days of waking up unable to swallow because of my sore throat, some fever and the achy pains I've been feeling all weekend, I decided going to the doctor today made more sense than anything else.

So on the way out the door this morning, I took this picture of the berries growing on a plant outside my apartment. I'm not up much on the names of plants. Every morning on my way out the door I get to see the beautiful red berries. The splash of color just makes my day.

These also remind me of the berries that grew in the front of my grandparents house. We called them chinaberries. I can't tell you how many times my cousins and I would have chinaberry fights, ending up with berries all over the yard and front porch. And, just about the time we slowed down, ready to quit, my grandmother would come out the door with a couple of brooms and tell us it was time to clean up!
